Crown thinning is the selective removal of branches from the tree. This technique is used for several reasons, some of these include: the reduction in weight of the crown; to remove crossing branches that may be rubbing off each other causing damage; to allow more light into the crown; and allow more air movement through the tree.

Crown thinning does not have to change the shape or size of a tree.
